Yanomamo Culture Essay Example For Students

Yanomamo Culture Essay There are many differences between the South American Yanomamo culture and the North American culture that we have adapted to, but just at there is culture diversity between us, we have some similarities. The ethnography, which is chose, was â€Å"Yanomamo† written by Napoleon A. Chagnon, anthropologists. Chagnon tells us how to it was to live among the Yanomamo family, political and warfare system versus the American Culture. The Yanomamo are of patrilineal culture, male oriented and very sexist. For some reason they believe that, they are superior to women, so do some men in American culture. However, they are jolted back reality when the law gets involved, unfortunately Yanomamo men don’t have this wake up call. Marriage is cross-cultural perspective. Yanomamo marriages are much different from that of American marriages. Yanomamo women are treated as materialistic objects and promised by their father or brother to a Yanomamo man in return for reciprocity. The reciprocity could be another Yanomamo women or political alliances. The trades are often practiced in the Yanomamo culture. Polygamy is also a part of the Yanomamo culture. Yanomamo women are kept in the male’s possession. The Yanomamo man tries to collect as many wives as he possibly can in order to demonstrate his power and masculinity. As polygamy in American Culture is referred to as bigamy which is against the law. We will write a custom essay on Yanomamo Culture specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Besides, polygamy, the practice of infanticide plays a role in the lack of women in their society. Yanomamo prefer to parent a male child rather than a female child, so in case a female is born she is killed at birth. This again proved their sexist beliefs that women are inferior. Many Yanomamo women fearing their husbands kill a female infant to avoid disappointing their so-called â€Å"better half†. To the people of American culture certain procedures of murdering a new born baby would be considered brutal, horrific and mutilation. But to the Yanomamo choking an infant to death with a vine, suffocating the infant by the placing a stick across her throat, or simply throwing the child against a tree and leaving it to suffer and then die is normal. Yet some Americans would also suggest that abortion is just like murder also, so what’s the difference! When an acceptable child is born into a Yanomamo family the mother breast-feeds him for a relatively long time. Children are nursed until they reach the age of at most, three or four. As long as the mother breast-feeds she is less likely to be fertile. This is a natural contraceptive. But if a new infant is born it will starve to death, because the older sibling would drink most of the milk, specially if it is a female infant. Male children grow up to be hunters and worriers. Female children although inferior (according to the Ya nomamo) are valuable objects of trade and political alliances. A confusing aspect of the Yanomamo marriages is, even though polygamy is freely practiced so is monogamy but only for the women. Adultery, just like in American culture, is inexcusable to the Yanomamo. In this topic similarities make a breakthrough in both cultures. If relationship between an American woman and an American man goes putrescent and the woman becomes promiscuous violence is only expected by the man. The problem is assault and battery charges can get you into a lot of trouble, not to mention how much you would have to pay a lawyer. But Yanomamo mean get away with their violent retaliation for being disrespected because again there are no laws protecting Yanomamo women not that American women are always protected by the law, it’s just a myth. .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d , .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .postImageUrl , .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d , .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:hover , .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:visited , .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:active { border:0!important; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:active , .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2cd85e904e02fd6af7994404cae8e34d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: I.t. doctors database analysis EssayThe punishment for the Yanomamo women who is only suspected of having an affair with another man is being beaten with a club, burned, shot with a barbed arrow, or the man decides to detach a limb (ex. Arm, leg) with an ax or machete. Even though it seems as though women are expendable is this culture she may have some one who would aid her if she needed help, her brothers. A Yanomamo women’s endeavor and search for aid is not always successful espically if her brothers are in a remote village that you could reach if you walked for a couple of days. But if her brothers are around and close enough for some strange reason she might get a little more respect (not too much). Alliances or formal pacts between groups are incorporated through trade and feasting. The relationships between these two parties are strengthened when the exchange of women takes place. A political alliance begins with an agreement to trade. Women for the Yanomamo are like how money is for Americans. They need it for political game. But payment isn’t usually made at the same time. Members of one village will go to another and trade goods. The members of second village will have to reciprocate with other type of items some time later. With this constant trade at hand one village is always in debt to another. But this also is a good excuse for visiting the other village, and as long they keep in touch they have a tight bond between them. Another method of forming political alliances is feasting. Feasting is when one village invites village for a feast or dinner. During the feast there is a lot social activity. The Yanomamo dance and mingle with each other along with eating a different variety of foods. The only catch is the other village must reciprocate a feast by one village. This feast is more like an American dinner party in which members of family or social group invite others to attend. A feast however can be dangerous and or fatal for those who attend. The Yanomamo can be very conniving and deceiving. They pretend to be loyal friends and invite the other village for a feast. The other very village very trustfully attends the feast not knowing that this might be their last meal. After the feast when the guests are helplessly resting in their hammocks they are attacked and brutally beaten to death. Yanomamo feasts can be dangerous, unlike American dinner parties, which are not violent other than an occasional mishap. But nothing likes the Yanomamo who plots a conspiracy to attack the guests. The Yanomamo warfare is commonly motivated by revenge. Because the lack of women many villagers raid on another village abducting as many women’s they possibly can. While abducting women they try and kill as many enemies as they can. When the village that was victimized has had some atonement and are prepared they seek out for revenge on the village that attacked them, sometimes procuring the women who were initially from their village. American warfare maybe a little more involved then the Yanomamo. Our quarrels are not over women, unless it is domestic, but our political reasons. And Americans don’t limit themselves, just to satisfy their need for a war they go international. And with all of the technology these day can do a lot more than villages. Americans also have alliances other countries. These alliances are for backup, just in case a country decides that imperialism is the key to a strong nation, the other countries who signed the treaty back them up. But warfare for any society in my opinion is barbaric and deplorable. The differences and similarities between the Yanomamo culture and American culture maybe vast, but all humans have an adoption to their culture. If an aspect of the Yanomamo culture is different from American culture it’s discriminated against because it is not understood. Keeping an open mind while I was reading the book was difficult because I was shocked by some of the ways they conducted themselves. But I realized that American don’t really conduct themselves in an orderly fashion at all time either. The Yanomamo make use of the little technology they have,, we on the other hand take advantage of the mass of technology that we have. The similarities between the Yanomamo and Americans was crystal clear, I could imagine Americans without technology living like the Yanomamo the only difference would be Americans would not be handle themselves under theses circumstances. .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 , .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .postImageUrl , .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 , .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:hover , .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:visited , .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:active { border:0!important; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:active , .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0 .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0783ad42242a8270c29849e43c31afe0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Drawing and Recording by Lens-Based Media EssayAnthropology

Student Jobs English Group Project

Student Jobs English Group Project Free Online Research Papers Student Jobs English Group Project It’s necessary for us to know something we should care about before finding a job. At the same time, it’s important for us to know why we want to have a job. For example, I asked my roommate some questions, which is the student of Chinese department, and we can know what he feels when doing the job from the bellowed dialogues. By the way, now he is a private teacher. First: Haven’t you ever worried about your studies since you got this job? Answer: No. for one thing, my studies is not so much. For another, it is not take you much time to be a private teacher. Just eight hours a week. Second: did you have another job before? Just tell me the differences between them? Answer: Oh, Yes. I stayed a cram school to solve questions of the subject of Chinese for high school students. But I found that the job is not quite easy to do. I usually needed to prepare a lot for solving their questions. But now, I just teach only one student, and I won’t be under that heavy stress. Besides I get a high-paid. Third: do you have some experience you want to share us? Answer: When it comes to it, I met to have that kind of student who regards himself as infallible to take the very difficult questions to ask me on purpose. At this time, I often gave back these questions to him and was tactful to tell him not to do such a stupid thing next time. Uhh, another is, there you can know many people, such as pretty high school girls, students, my boss, and student’s parents. Being friend with them, I learn a lot, such as how to getting along with people, how to dealing with emergency. I think it’s good. Fourth: which do you choose the standard of the job from at the beginning? Answer: well, only one thing I think that I can do is teaching. Cause I major in Chinese. Besides the place where I go can’t too far. And the jobs can’t make me feel stressed. And I can get a high-paid. Basically, I found that kind of job, which we can get high-paid, not many things to do, and place you work near our home is the best choice, is not easy to find. Maybe by the next example we can know a lot. Let’s go next. Rodney King Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Rodney King - Research Paper Example It will also review whether the attack was a case of police brutality, racial discrimination etc or on the other hand whether it was a justified action on the part of the law enforcement officials of the City. Relevant statistical data will also be given that justifies either of the stands or viewpoints given above. The Unfolding of the King Story and its Aftermath It could be said that the incident sparked off indignation and disbelief followed by forms of illegal retribution from the minority community in the city. â€Å"On March 03 1991, a bystander videotaped Rodney King, an African-American resident of Los Angeles, being beaten up by four White officers of the Los Angeles Police Department, who used a sten gun on King and repeatedly kicked him and hit him with batons† (Sigelman et al, 777, 1997). The article goes on to explain the (initial) feelings of various individuals who expressed indignation regarding the action of the LA police department. The amateur video segment does show King being overpowered and eventually being brutalized by a superior force, the officers of the City Police Department. ... exited at the Sunland Boulevard off ramp and returned to the freeway to chase the speeding car at speeds of up to 117 miles per hour.   King ignored the flashing lights and sped off an exit ramp.   He ran a red light, nearly causing an accident, before finally coming to a stop near the entrance to Hansen Dam Park, at the intersection of Osborne Street and Foothill Boulevard.   Within seconds, three Los Angeles police cars and a police helicopter arrived at the scene† (Linder 2001). King apparently stopped at a busy neighborhood so that there were possible witnesses as to what would happen to him after his imminent stoppage and possible arrest by the police. But what happened was a scene of brutality that was beyond the any civilized action by a law enforcement agency considering the crime King committed, namely driving under influence (DUI), probation restrictions, exceeding speed limits, and avoiding police action. The cornered car contained three occupants including Kin g. Two of the occupants complied with police demands to lie down on the ground and King did not apparently did not do likewise. The four officers (out of other police personnel) involved brutally attacked an apparently unarmed King. The amateur video taken by George Holliday showed an instance of how police personnel tackle a person accused of breaking the law. King was repeatedly beaten with batons and kicked by the officers involved. It was always reported that other law enforcement officials of the LA police department were silent or passive witnesses to the incident. King was repeatedly beaten and sometimes kicked by the law enforcement officials without any apparent aggressive act by the former. â€Å"Mr. King at first said to have only 'cuts and bruises' received while resisting arrest had his

The two business partners will offer global dance brands in an effort to promote the company Dance space into an excellent company (Griffin 584). The business idea has been implemented, and Tang starts to give the dance lessons and selling the video in various stores across Canada and Britain. The two have targeted about three websites for customers to mingle as well as download the earlier mentioned video with different varieties of dance videos (Griffin 584). The two had been now concentrated on the investm ents such that they forgot to come up with a solid sales pitch. On the meeting day, they give a performance and then discuss the prospects of the company. The two experts offer their arguments on the business preparation. Robert Herjavec disagrees with Beverly and Tang’s ideas and insists they should also target the young generation as well as the boomers are have no technologically awareness and using the websites cannot work (Griffin 584). Conversely, KO supports the ideas by the two but also insists that Beverly and Tang should revamp their language and that they should form different segments for different age groups (Griffin 584). Being a new company based on the interests of a given demographic group, the company owners need to analyze the external and internal S.W.O.T to come up effectively with a solid sales pitch. Management A Universal Phenomenon Commerce Essay

Management A Universal Phenomenon Commerce Essay Management is a universal phenomenon it is very famous and mostly used term every where. All organisation either they are political cultural or social involved in management. Because its only a management which directs actions into success. According to Harold Koontz Management is an art of getting things done through and with the people in formally organized group. It is an art of creating such a environment in which people can perform and co operate towards achieving the goals. according to FW Taylor Management is an art of of knowledge what to do when to do and see that it is done in best and cheap way. Management is such a purposive activity which leads the whole groups effort into success and pre defined goals attainment. Its a process of working with others as a team and effectively achieve the goals of organisation with the help of limited resources. These goals may vary from one organization to another organization. Management also involve creating an internal environment it is a management which put many factors of production. Thats why its the responsibility of management to create such a situation which are conducive to maximum effort so that members of management can perform their task that is fitting the square pegs in square holes and round pegs in round hole. Success factors: for any organisation certain factors will be critical to the success of that organisation in the sense that if objectives associated with the factors are not achieved the organisation will fail perhaps catastrophically so. Following an example of generic critical success factors. New Product Development Good Distribution and Effective advertising Following are the types of critical success factors. Industry critical success factors resulting from specific industry characteristics. Strategy critical success factors resulting from the chosen competitive strategy of the business. Environmental critical success factors resulting from technological or economic Temporal critical success factor resulting from internal organizational needs. Each of these success factors should be measurable and linked to achieving the goal of organization. You have no need to exact measure to manage. Basic measure also should include the critical success level like numbers of transition per month or in case where specific measurements are more difficult main goal should be specified. Critical Success factors: an element of organisational activity which is key element to its future success. Critical success factors can be change from time to time. And may include item such as product quality employee behaviour manufacturing flexibility and brand awareness. Any of the aspects of a business which are identified as a vital of successful targets to be reached and maintained. Critical success factors are normally identified in such areas as production process, employee and organisation skills functions techniques and technologies. Employee Motivation employee motivation is one of the main success factor. Because employee play an important role in the success of whole organisation. With out employee manager or organisation cant achieve their goals. Employees are backbone of any organisation. Some time its very hard to get goals and employees need some motivation for getting that goals thats why employees motivation is very important factor. Its enhance their commitment level with the organisation and make them more strong and boast their moral. Only those organisation can be successful in the businesses who motivates their employees. Its a key of getting good result and to achieve its targets. As its saying that you can horse to water but you cant force it to drink it will drink only it is thirsty. Similarly employees will do what they want to do. Weather it is to excel on the workplace or in the ivory tower they must want motivation or driven to do it. Either by themselves or through others. Managers can motivate its work force by different ways like Job Enrichment It gives opportunity to employees to maximise utilization of their skills by assigning them assignments. By the job enrichment you can expand the tasks set that employee has to perform. You provide more interesting work that enhance the variety and challenge to work force daily routine. By this it leads to the work force more control on their work. By this factors you can design the job that can be helpful in motivation Skill variety Identification of task significance of task Autonomy Feedback There is also availability of option in job enrichment like Rotate Jobs It gives option to the work force to get the different sort of skills and show their performance in different sort of woks. This is the easiest way to get this by the help of rotation of job. Combine Tasks By working in a team its gives more challenging and complex work assignment. This can significantly enhance the identification of task because work force can see job from beginning to end, this can be cause of maximum utilization of skills which can make workers or employees more meaningful, others factors also include Identify project focused work force Develop autonomous work team Participative Management Redistribute Power Increase Feedback Pygmolian Motivation by this management can set a high standard of expectations can relise their workforce that this is what we want from you and you are calibre of this Motivation is a necessary skill which must be learnt. This is very essential for the success of business. Those organisation adopting the policy of continuously motivation of its employees can easily get their goals so its shows that motivation of work force is also a success factor of business. Risk Management: Risk management is an other important factor for the success of business organisation. Those businesses who undertake risk and forecast for unseen future problems. Its an integral part of managing business. Companies face different types of risk. Some may be external in nature which are not under the direct of the management. Like political environment the changes in exchange rates or fluctuation in interest. Some may be internal threat as well like in nature which the management can control to great extent for instance risk is linked with the non compliance in financial reporting or non compliance with the laws of labour. So its better to undertake the risk management because if unfortunately organisation has to face any problem in future there would be some substitute option for any problem. By this business organisation can avoid to suffer from heavy loss in future and this can company or organisation can get advantage on its those competitors those do not adopt this. So this is very important factor in today business environment. Risk management is a proactive process its not a reactive process. We can explain it with the example of Shell Oil which has a lot of offices in the New Orleans region but deal with Katrina and Hurricane weather well do to the risk management that it has in place. Risk can be transferred but it can not be eliminated, business organisation can contract with those companies who are willing to take risk like buying an insurance policy risk can be transferred. Or it can be reduced by taking some extra steps for control. Committed and Focused Leadership: leadership and power is linked with each other very closely. Its nature that people tend to follow those who are in power. And because of others follow the person who posses the power he be become leader. Leaders have power because the are experienced in their field or they are the members of the admin. And leadership is very important for the success of any business organisation. Because leaders leads the work force and work force lead to organisations success. Good leader is who deal from the front .And deal with the problems very smartly. Leaders give directions and road map to its work force who utilize their skills and play an active role in the achievement of the goals. So those organisations who have good leaders they are getting their targets easily. As much leaders are committed as they are going very well in business and management. Work force or individual can not lead organisation to success until unless they have committed leader in them. Its the only leader who take the organisation on peak with the help of its or leader who can cause in the failure of the organisation. So leaders role is very important role in organisation. Leader must engage all team in work and keep motivated to its team because with the help of motivation. He should collaborate and keep work force on process. The attribution theory in leadership show that people characterize that a leader who has such traits as intelligence he possess the outgoing personality he should also have strong communication skills. So a leader who possess these skills he would be an asset of the organisation and can play his role in the achievement of the organisational goals. Now organisations are looking for the transformational leadership qualities in leaders. They want such a leader who has the strong vision. And obviously a true leader is only that one who shows a good behaviour at the right time. And effective management now a days must develop trusting relation ship with those they are looking for that they are going to lead in future. Main Obstacle to effective organisation : There are different obstacles in todays management which effect the performance and create hurdles in the achievement of the organisation. So before this organisation must has to identify what are those obstacle and then they can find out solution to it. So its very important to find out the obstacle in the organisation. Powers and Politics Power refer to a capacity that some one has influence the behaviour of some one so that he can act in accordance with the wishes of the leader. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words :: essays papers

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Photography may be a more effective and reasonably inexpensive alternative to drawing or painting, but more thought and feeling goes into a painting than a photograph. Photography is relatively simple in comparison to painting, which is a much more complex task. With photography, the composition is already completely arranged, but with a painting the objective is much more open to interpretation by the artist. The artist has the ability to capture much more emotion, understanding, and significance in an event and apply this fiery drive to his paintbrush when creating his own masterpiece. When dealing with reality, I think a photograph may represent an actual physical recollection of a person or object, but a painting created from scratch adds the reality of perception to the equation. Reality is always open to a different observation and interpretation. Artists during the Realism period concentrated on the real world as they saw it, and chose to construct their pieces of work with normal, everyday activities, therefore making it all the more real. One painter during this time period was Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. In his piece titled Ville d’Avray, he chooses to capture a woman in a forest-like setting. The text states Corot worked very quickly so that he could capture the â€Å"underlying rhythm of nature† to make his landscapes reveal the magic moment of truth. In my interpretation, his quick brushstrokes in light and dark values are meant to create movement; you can practically see the wind blowing through the rustling trees, gently swaying the woman’s long, flowing skirt. With his choice of colors, I can feel a slight chill from the breeze due to the haziness and dimly lit sky. If this were a photograph, the image would be less blurred, and I would see a woman, a couple of trees, and more defined colo rs. I wouldn’t feel anything from the photograph. I would just see objects. With this painting however, I interpret it to make me feel a certain way (serene and lethargic), and it provokes me to ponder as to why this woman is amongst the trees on such a blustery day. This painting allows me to reflect and speculate upon whether the artist had similar feelings while creating such a magnificent composition. Another thought-provoking painting created during the Realism period is Gustave Courbet’s Burial at Ornans.
